Book Description
Herbert McChesney's memoir records many of the "staggering changes" occurring in the first half of the 20th century from an intensely personal standpoint. This "rather unexciting or even sometimes humdrum life" was rich in experiences unknown to us today. The author's puckish sense of humor combines with a prodigious memory for detail to allow us to experience the now exotic everyday details of life as a child and young adult growing up in the first half of the 20th century. From his first recollection of rides in his perambulator to his experiences driving a horsedrawn milkcart in the Depression, his lively stories bring alive an era fast slipping from the collective memory.
About the Author
Herbert L. McChesney was born in 1908 in Springfield, Massachusetts, son of working class parents. He trained as a chemist at the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass) and spent most of his professional career at Monsanto. His love of history led him in his retirement to assume the post of Town Historian of Ludlow, MA where he had settled with his wife and five children in 1950. In 1978, he completed The History of Ludlow: 1774-1974, an exhaustive account commissioned and published for the bicentennial of the town. Before his death in 1997, he continued his historical writing in a more personal vein, inspired by his grandchildren's insatiable desire to hear stories from his youth.
