Book Description

Teaching Online is a practical, concise guide for instructors teaching distance learning courses or instructors supplementing a traditional classroom with online elements. This pocket-sized, portable book can be used as either a course text or a professional resource.

Written by authors who have both taught online courses and trained hundreds of faculty to teach online, the text serves as a pedagogical "how-to," addressing instructors' most commonly asked questions and concerns. Its informal style reassures readers that they do not have to be technology professionals to make the transition to the world of online teaching.

About the Author
"Susan Ko has a Ph.D. from Yale University and spent over ten years teaching and developing courses in humanities, interdisciplinary studies, Asian Studies, and world literature in the California State University system as well as at numerous private institutions. She has particular expertise working with adult and non-traditional student populations and has been involved in nearly every form of distance education.

Since first teaching online for the New School's DIAL program in 1997, Ms. Ko has created numerous courses for online delivery and has assisted thousands of instructors in adapting and converting their own courses. Through her involvement in UCLA Extension's pioneering Online Teaching Program she also trained educators from all over the world to teach online.

As Director of Online Curriculum and Instructor Development at OnlineLearning.net and later as Vice President, Online Program Design with Sylvan Online Higher Education, she has been a leader in the design of customized faculty training and support programs as well as the establishment of systems and quality standards for the development of online courses.

Steve Rossen has been working with instructors using technology in the classroom and on the Web since 1994. After earning an M.Ed in Educational Technology from California State University, he went on to manage UCLA's Faculty New Media Center, a center/lab where instructors and TAs experiment with, train with, and use new media technologies. He brings to this field experience gained from working in both the broadcast and publishing industries as a writer/producer and novelist.

He has been an online instructor for over five years at UCLA Extension, where he created two innovative courses for the Online Teaching Program: ""Creating and Using Multimedia Online"" and ""Streaming Media."" In addition, he is a candidate for an MLIS from UCLA's Graduate School of Information Science and expects to receive his degree in June, 2004. "
