Awakening the Past: The East Hampton 350th Anniversary Lecture Series 1998
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Now published for the first time in one beautifully bound volume, these 27 lectures, delivered in 1998, present a new perspective on the early days of one of America's most influential "small towns," and its impact on New York State and the nation. In 1998, the Town of East Hampton commemorated its 350th anniversary with a year-long celebration, the centerpiece of which was a lecture series presented by noted national scholars and historians, all experts on various aspects of the area. The series covered East Hampton's history from colonial 17th century to the present day, and included lectures by:
* Richard S. Dunn, Ph.D., on "John Winthrop, Jr., of Connecticut-The First Governor of the East End"
* T.H. Breen, Ph.D., on "Trade and Community: East Hampton's Curious Commercial Origins"
* Dr. Robert C. Ritchie on "East Hampton versus New York"
* Dr. Langdon G. Wright on "The Origin of Government in East Hampton"
* Christopher M. Collier, Ph.D., on "East Hampton: A Strategic Outpost of Connecticut in the 1660s"
* John M. Murrin, Ph.D., on "East Hampton in the Seventeenth Century"
* Paul Goldberger on "East Hampton Architecture: Plain and Fancy"
Located on the East End of Long Island, New York, East Hampton is one of the most famous "small towns" in America, and home to some of the country's most artistic and influential people.
