Book Description
Theodore Sterner Christ was born in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania, on April 21, 1830. He was educated at the Lewisburg Academy and went to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he earned his medical degree on March 15, 1860. He practiced as a physician and surgeon in Lewisburg as well as Chester, Delaware County (1865-1878), and Lemont, Centre County, where he died in 1910. He rose to the rank of surgeon-in-chief of the Second Division, Ninth Army Corps in the Union Army in 1864, having first enlisted on April 18, 1861. Theo Christ's war diaries as well as others are property of the Union County Historical Society and are part of a sizable collection of medical equipment, Civil War souvenirs, and personal collections donated by one of his daughters, Mary Irvin Christ Macmillan.

About the Author
In 1993, Kenn Reagle, a Masters Degree student in the American Studies Program at Penn State/Capital Campus, asked the Union County Historical Society if it had any diaries or journals. Gary Slear, chair of the Archives and Museum Committee, was mindful of a recent gift that he thought might have such material. The Christ collection indeed did. Kenn, a Venango County native, became immersed in the life and times of another but former Lewisburg resident, Theodore Sterner Christ. In 1994, Mr. Reagle completed his thesis and it is reprinted with his permission now. It centers on the central Pennsylvania lifestyle of a young pharmicist, then medical student, and last surgeon in the Civil War. Kenn Reagle continues to research the later period of Christ's life in Centre County.
