2,000 volunteers from Britain, Ireland, and Wales fought against Franco in the International Brigade. A smaller number fought for Franco, including the author, whose fervent anti-communism and ache for adventure inspired the 21-year-old to volunteer in 1936. This personal diary tells movingly of his enlistment as an infantryman in the Foreign Legion, despite his ignorance of Spain and Spanish. After rudimentary training, he joined the Sixth Bandera in the advance on Madrid and was involved in a series of battles during which his unit suffered a 75% casualty rate.
