"An extremely important book on one of the signature crimes of Stalinism and one of the great efforts of obfuscation of Soviet propaganda."-Timothy Snyder, Yale University
Book Description
The murder of over 20,000 Polish prisoners of war in the forests around Katyn in spring 1940 is among the most monstrous mass murders undertaken by any modern government up to the Holocaust. For 60 years thereafter, the crime was not expiated, punished or acknowledged. Katyn exposes the background and mechanics of the Soviet mass executions. 14,500 army officers, police, gendarmes, and civilians taken by the Red Army when it invaded eastern Poland in September 1939 were executed at three different sites, of which Katyn is the most famous. Seven thousand three hundred other prisoners were also shot elsewhere at this time.
The world’s three leading historians of the Katyn massacre present 122 documents, with introductions and endnotes, selected from the published Russian and Polish volumes co-edited by Natalia S. Lebedeva and Wojciech Materski. The documents detail Soviet killings, the elaborate cover-up, the admission of truth, and the Katyn question in Soviet/Russian-Polish relations in the years 1941-2000.
