World War II Letters and Notes of Col. James H. Polk gives a firsthand and very personal account of the campaign to defeat the Nazi army in France and Germany through the unique perspective of Col. Polk's letters to his wife. Serving as C.O. of the 3rd Cavalry Group (Mechanized), which spearheaded General George S. Patton, Jr's 3rd Army, Col. Polk's letters encompass the Normandy invasion, the hedgerow fighting and dash across France, crossing the Moselle River into Germany, and final victory over the Nazi Army in Bavaria. Following the armistice, the letters additionally cover the displaced persons (DP) camp at Feldafing and the humanitarian effort to help those who survived the Holocaust and the war.
