Card catalog description
John Morrill has revisited his famous and influential work. His new version is more than just an update. It has been rethought and re-focused (as its new title makes clear), and also upgraded. The original appeared as part of a documents-based series of relatively modest scope; here, however, Professor Morrill has omitted the documentary appendices (incorporating key extracts in the text itself), and used the extra space to expand and develop his own ideas. The central argument of the book has not been changed, but the lines of that argument have been clarified and refined. Most importantly, there are two major new chapters, accounting for more than one third of the entire book. Far more than just a new edition of a classic text, Revolt in the Provinces is an important statement about how historical understanding evolves and develops.
