Germans in Wisconsin (Ethnic Series)
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Booming with bratwurst, beer, and polka bands, Wisconsin has the highest percentage (almost 54%) of German Americans of any state in the nation. This best-selling book, first published in 1977, is now available in a new updated edition. Richard Zeitlin traces the progress of Wisconsin's German population from territorial days to the arrival of the radical and intellectual Forty-Eighters before the Civil War; through their political participation in the new Republican Party, the Progressive party, and various socialist and workers' parties; their roles as farmers and city folk, businesspeople and factory workers; and the devastating effect of World Wars I and II on German American culture in Wisconsin. Mingling among German immigrants from many regions over many decades has produced a German American culture that bears little relationship to the real thing in Germany, but has become distinctly "Wisconsin."
