This volume contains essays by scholars who have in some way been associated with David Patterson and with the Oxford Centre for Postgraduate Hebrew Studies. The essays explore the nature and function of the academies and similar institutions throughout the ages, the leading personalities associated with them and their social, cultural and moral effect.
Dedicated to Dr. David Patterson, this book explores the Hebrew academy interpreted in its broadest terms as an institution of Judaic scholarship. Throughout the ages, the academies were more than schools of higher religious education but incorporated rational analysis of the scriptures, the natural sciences and other secular studies. Some of the most celebrated academies were of high intellectual order, sometimes even superior to early European Christian universities.
