Originally published in 1978 by Dorsey Press, this is a straightforward narrative of the history of Modern Western civilization which weaves socio-economic and cultural developments into the discussion. The book concentrates on Western civilization as it developed and spread throughout the world. A premise of this volume is that "Western" civilization belongs to twentieth century Americans; it is not limited to Europeans, whites, or a thin and "cultured" upper level of society.
