This is a complete revise of an earlier book issued under the same title. Like Mark Twain observed, to write of the gold rush and ignore its carnage would be like writing of Mormonism without referring to polygamy.
In one California gold camp, a man was hanged for horse stealing. It was later found out, after the hanging, that the man was actually innocent.
The penitent vigilante mob sent a messenger to the widow of the wrongly hanged man. "We hanged Jim for stealing a horse," the messenger told the widow. "But come to find out, he didn't do it, so I guess the joke's on us."
Not all was so callous in the gold camps, and we promise you a good trek if you'll join us.
About the Author
A graduate of California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, the author has worked for United Press International, the Salinas Daily Californian newspaper, and California Farmer Magazine.
Since leaving California Farmer, he has written for Golf Course Management Magazine, Western Horseman Magazine, and Capital Press.
